The monk Cintāmaṇi (translated into Tang [Chinese] as Bao Siwei [“Precious Thought”]) was a native of the country of Kaśmīra in North India, belonging to the kṣatriya caste. Leaving home in his early childhood, he took meditation and recitation as his vocation. After receiving the full precepts, he specialized exclusively in the Vinaya codes; moreover, his wisdom and understanding were extraordinary, his learning spanning both the ultimate and the conventional. In the second year of Changshou (693), he arrived at the capital of Luoyang and was ordered by imperial decree to be accommodated at Tiangong Monastery. From the second year of Changshou under Empress Wu, a guisi year (693), to the second year of Shenlong under Emperor Zhongzong, a bingwu year (706), at Shouji, Tiangong, Fuxian, and other monasteries, he translated the Bukong juansuo tuoluoni zizai wang zhou jing (Amoghapāśarāja-dhāraṇī-sūtra) in three fascicles; the Yuxiang gongde jing in one fascicle; the Jiaoliang shuzhu gongde jing in one fascicle; the Guanshiyin pusa ruyi mani tuoluoni jing in one fascicle; the Wenshushili genben yizi tuoluoni jing in one fascicle; the Datuoluoni mofa zhong yizi xin zhou jing in one fascicle; and the Suiqiu jide dazizai tuoluoni shenzhou jing in one fascicle—amounting to seven works in nine fascicles altogether. The Kapiśa monk Śrīnanda translated [the texts]; the monk Huizhi and others served as certifiers of Sanskrit; the brāhmaṇa Li Wuchan interpreted; and the monk Degan, Li Wu’ai, Drafter of the Secretariat, and others served as scribes.
