The monk Mitraśānta (translated into Tang [Chinese] as Jiyou [“Tranquil Friend”]) was a native of Tokharistan. Leaving home in his youth, he traveled through the five regions of India studying various sūtras and śāstras, achieving the utmost mastery in the Laṅkāvatāra and the Abhidharmakośa. At first, he worked with Śikṣānanda in translating the Dacheng ru lengqie jing (Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra). Later, in the final years of Empress Wu, together with the monk Fazang and others, he translated the Wugou jingguang tuoluoni jing (Vimalanirbhāsa-dhāraṇī-sūtra) in one fascicle.
