[... are included in Xinxing's collected records; an explicit imperial decree ordered them abolished and abandoned, so we do not dare retain them, and therefore record them in this catalogue].
Sūtra on the Six Meanings of the Buddhadharma that One Must First Understand, in one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue lacks the character "sūtra"; it is present in Fei Changfang's catalogue).
Sūtra of Doctrinal Gates on the Unhindered Six Supernormal Powers and Pure Karma of the Six Sense Bases, in one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue lacks the character "sūtra"; it is present in Fei Changfang's catalogue).
The above two works in two fascicles. The Liang catalogue by Sengyou states: "Produced by the monk Shi Fayuan during the time of Emperor Wu of the Qi dynasty, who excerpted and collected doctrinal meanings of the sūtras. Although propagating sūtra doctrines differs from forging works, once titles are established, they separately constitute individual works and fascicles. Fearing that later generations would be confused and misled, this is clearly annotated in the catalogue." (Fei Changfang's catalogue states: "They are commonly cited in the world as doubtful sūtras, so they are recorded again to be transmitted to later generations; may those who recognize their source equally evaluate them with the utmost clarity.")
Sūtra of Enumerations Instituted by the Buddha, in five fascicles.
The above one work in five fascicles. The Liang catalogue by Sengyou states: "Composed by the monk Shi Wangzong during the time of Emperor Wu of the Qi dynasty. Excerpting and compiling various sūtras, it resembles a forest of numbers. But since its title claims to be 'instituted by the Buddha', fearing the confusion of name and reality, it is annotated in the catalogue." (Fei Changfang's catalogue states: "Having the title of a sūtra at the beginning, it was entered into the catalogue; since it is not an authentic sūtra, it is suspected by the world.")
Sūtra on the Adornment of the Fruits of the Precepts, in one fascicle (Some lack the character "sūtra"; it contains an eight-chapter verse).
The above one work in one fascicle. The catalogue by Fei Changfang, Scholar of Translation Bureau in the Sui dynasty, states: "Compiled by the Attendant Yu Jie in the fifth year of the Yongming era under Emperor Wu of the Xiao Qi dynasty, adopting the ideas of sūtras." (The compiler notes: "Adopting ideas to compose verses differs from forging anew; yet since it separately establishes a sūtra title, it is feared it may be conflated with the sacred scriptures. The Sui Renshou Catalogue and the Great Zhou Catalogue classify it among the spurious works; now, following them, it is likewise entered into the catalogue of spurious works.")
Excerpts from the Avataṃsaka-sūtra, in fourteen fascicles (Changfang's catalogue says thirteen fascicles).

Excerpts from the Inquiring about Illness Chapter of the Vimalakīrti, in one fascicle (In the Neidian Catalogue, the three chapters of Buddha Realm, Upāyakauśalya, and Inquiring about Illness make two fascicles altogether).
Excerpts from the Ānāpānasmṛti-sūtra, in one fascicle.
Excerpts from the Sūtra on the Bodhisattva's Original Karma, in one fascicle.

Excerpts on the Method of Receiving Precepts for Upāsakas, in one fascicle.
Excerpts from the Sūtra on the Poor Woman Becoming the Queen, in one fascicle.
The Liang catalogue by Sengyou states: "From the Avataṃsaka-sūtra to the Sūtra on the Poor Woman Becoming the Queen, there are thirty-six works in all. They were all excerpted by Prince Wenxuan of Jingling of the Qi dynasty. Whenever the character 'excerpt' appears above a title, they are all excerpted by Wenxuan."
Excerpts from the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, in fifty-nine fascicles.
Excerpts from the Abhidharma-vibhāṣā, in fifty-nine fascicles.
Excerpts from the Vimalakīrti-sūtra, in twenty-six fascicles.
Excerpts from the Sūtra on the Bodhisattva's Decisive Essential Practices, in ten fascicles (Also titled Sūtra of Upāsakas with Pure Practices; Fajing's catalogue calls it Pusa jueding jing).
Excerpts from the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra, in nine fascicles (Changfang's catalogue says eight fascicles).
Regarding the above Tattvasiddhi-śāstra, the Liang catalogue by Sengyou states: "In the seventh year of the Yongming era, Prince Wenxuan invited Shi Sengrou of Upper Dinglin Monastery and Shi Huici of Minor Zhuangyan Monastery, among others, to excerpt it together at Puhong Monastery."
Excerpts from the Śrīmālā-sūtra, in seven fascicles.
Regarding the six works below the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, Changfang's catalogue states that they were excerpted by Wenxuan.
Excerpts from the Sūtra on Renouncing the Body for the Dharma, in six fascicles (Renshou Catalogue says three fascicles).
The above one sūtra, the Neidian Catalogue states, was excerpted by Wenxuan.
The above forty-three works in two hundred ninety-eight fascicles, from the Avataṃsaka-sūtra downwards, upon collating various catalogues, were all excerpted by Xiao Ziliang, Prince Wenxuan of Jingling and Minister of Works under the Southern Qi dynasty. (Changfang's catalogue states: "The Prince had a fondness for extensive research and personally compiled these texts; being modest, he forgot about formal circulation, not intending them to be transmitted to later careless people. Subsequent scholars copied and read them one after another. Worldly people mixed them up, confounding the authentic texts. Therefore, the main outlines are cited in the hope that their origins may be known. Whenever the character 'excerpt' appears above the title, they all belong to this category; by examining their beginnings and endings in detail, they naturally distinguish themselves." The Neidian Catalogue states: "Since they differ from the original sūtras and the prefix 'excerpt' is explicitly added to distinguish them, letting later seekers know they have an origin; and moreover, their flavor is widely communicative, their doctrinal meaning congenial and appropriate, engaging the common and unlearned with wide breadth and examining the diverse paths of human nature and desire, they certainly possess great value and their doctrine is by no means doubtful or spurious. Yet catalogues such as those of Sengyou and Changfang all annotated them as doubtful sūtras; this was entirely out of fear that they might border on superficiality and that their residual influence might lose the original.")
Excerpts from the Jingdu sanmei, in one fascicle.
Miscellaneous Excerpts from the Vinaya and Sūtras, in one fascicle.
Excerpts from the Benqi jing, in one fascicle.
Excerpts from the Shan jing, in one fascicle (Sengyou states it was recorded in old catalogues).
Excerpts from the Five Hundred Brahmā Vinaya Sūtras, in one fascicle (Sengyou states it was recorded in old catalogues).
Excerpts from the Great Ocean's Deep Perils Sūtra, in one fascicle (Sengyou states the above six sūtras are all old excerpts).
Fayuan jing, in one hundred eighty-nine fascicles (Sengyou states this single sūtra was excerpted, compiled, and extracted from various sūtras in recent times, grouped by category; although titled Fayuan jing, it belongs to the category of excerpts).
The above fifty-four works in five hundred one fascicles, from the Six Meanings of the Buddhadharma downwards, all have titles that confuse them with authentic sūtras, or contain additions and deletions in their phrases, or blend disparate doctrines under separate titles. If included among the canonical texts, it is feared jade and stones would be conflated; if universally regarded as spurious, their source still has grounds. The two paths of accepting or rejecting them are indeed difficult to settle. For now, following the old catalogues, they are compiled at the end of the spurious section. May later scholars who consult them examine their merits and demerits carefully.
