[they only] took the meaning to compose verses, which is not the same as fabricating [a scripture]. Yet since a separate scripture title was established, fearing it might be confused with sacred scriptures, the Sui Renshou Catalogue and Great Zhou Catalogue placed it among the apocrypha. Now, following them, it is also compiled here in the apocrypha catalogue).

The above: Sengyou's catalogue states: From the Avataṃsaka-sūtra to the Poor Woman Becoming the King's Consort Sūtra, in all thirty-six scriptures, were all extracted by King Wenxuan of Jingling of the Qi. In all cases where the word "Extract" (Chao) precedes the title, they were extracted by Wenxuan.
Extract from the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, fifty-nine fascicles
Extract from the Abhidharma-vibhāṣā, fifty-nine fascicles
Extract from the Vimalakīrti-sūtra, twenty-six fascicles

Extract from the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra, nine fascicles (the Changfang Catalogue says eight fascicles)
The above: concerning the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra, Liang dynasty Sengyou's catalogue states: In the seventh year of the Yongming era, King Wenxuan invited Shi Sengrou of Dinglin Upper Monastery, Shi Huici of Minor Zhuangyan Monastery, and others, to compile the extracts together at Puhong Monastery.
Extract from the Śrīmālā-sūtra, seven fascicles (the Changfang Catalogue says the six works below the Lotus Sūtra were extracted by King Wenxuan)
Extract from the Sūtra on Relinquishing the Body for the Dharma, six fascicles (the Renshou Catalogue says three fascicles)
The one scripture above: the Neidian lu states that it was extracted by Wenxuan. The above forty-three works in two hundred ninety-eight fascicles, from the Avataṃsaka-sūtra downward, having collated various catalogues, were all extracted by Xiao Ziliang, Prince of Jingling and Minister of Education of the Southern Qi.
(The Changfang Catalogue states: "The prince had an affection for broad research. He personally compiled and drafted these as reminders and reference records, never expecting that they would circulate in later generations or that subsequent scholars would copy and study them successively. People of the world have mixed them up and confounded the authentic texts. Therefore, I present the principal framework, hoping that the origins may be known. However, those with the word 'Extract' (Chao) in the title all belong to this category; if one investigates the beginnings and ends in detail, they naturally distinguish themselves." The Neidian lu states: "Since they differ from the original scriptures, the title 'Extract' clearly distinguishes them, allowing later researchers to know their provenance. Moreover, their flavor is thoroughly accessible and their principles completely agreeable; they gather together the profuse extensiveness of the vulgar world and examine the divergent paths of dispositions and desires, possessing a way of their own. In meaning they are neither doubtful nor false. Yet catalogues such as those of You and Changfang all label them doubtful scriptures, exclusively because they feared sinking into frivolous superficiality whose residual ripples lose the original.")
Extract from the Jingdu sanmei, one fascicle
Miscellaneous Extracts from Vinaya and Sūtras, one fascicle
Extract from the Benqi, one fascicle (You says: recorded in the old catalogues)
Extract from the Śyāma-sūtra, one fascicle (You says: recorded in the old catalogues)
Extract from the Five Hundred Monastic Vinaya Sūtra, one fascicle
Extract from the Great Ocean Deep and Perilous Sūtra, one fascicle
You says: the above six scriptures are all old extracts.
Lotus Sūtra, one hundred eighty-nine fascicles
You says: "This one scripture was compiled in recent generations based on anthologizing various scriptures and grouping them by category. Although given the title Lotus Sūtra, it belongs to the category of extracts."
The above fifty-four works in five hundred and one fascicles, from the Six Meanings of the Buddha Dharma downward, all bear titles that confuse them with authentic scriptures. Their sentences and phrases show additions and omissions, or they freshly blend differing meanings and establish distinct titles. If they were accepted among the orthodox, it is feared that jade and stones would be confounded; if they were uniformly treated as apocryphal, tracing their roots reveals authentic authority. The two alternatives of advancing or retreating are truly difficult to determine. For now, following the old catalogues, they are placed at the end of the apocrypha. May later scholars who consult them examine their merits and demerits carefully.
