Now, 'precepts' (śīla) is a general name for guarding against harm. The pure precepts of a bodhisattva restrict the mind alone, whereas the vinaya rules of a śrāvaka guard body and speech. Therefore, [in the Śrāvakapiṭaka] occasions give rise to transgressions, and gatherings of disciples lead to reproof and promulgation. For the great beings who are bodhisattvas, there is none of this. The Buddha directly expounded [the precepts] for them, causing them to uphold and practice them. Since there is no cause for transgression against prohibitions, instances of reproof and promulgation are absent. Those passages explaining the training rules in the various Mahāyāna sūtras have been culled and placed here, constituting what is called the Bodhisattva Vinayapiṭaka.
