As for the Vinayapiṭaka, the sūtra states that it is so called because it is supreme, secret, and formulated exclusively by the Buddha. Whereas in the sūtras disciples may preach the Dharma or various devas may preach the Dharma, the vinaya is not like this: it is spoken entirely by the Buddha. Since ancient times, various catalogues have all compiled the Mātṛkā, the Samantapāsādikā, and others into the authentic Vinayapiṭaka. Reflecting on this now, I fear that is inappropriate. These are all explanatory works and commentaries composed by various sages and worthies in accordance with their sectarian traditions after the division into schools; they were not spoken directly from the Buddha's golden mouth, nor were they compiled by the thousand sages. In compiling this catalogue, I have now divided them into two categories: first, explaining the authentic Vinayapiṭaka of the five schools; second, explaining the various treatises subordinate to the vinaya. In this way, I hope that root and branches will not be confused, and origin and periphery will be distinguished. I hope that knowledgeable persons will deign to correct any errors.
