…[I am] bewildered. The humble timber of the Deer Park is greatly ashamed before the Court of State Ceremonial. Unable to bear my extreme gratitude, I respectfully present this memorial to offer my thanks. The śramaṇa Amoghavajra, with sincere joy and sincere trepidation, speaks with respect.
Submitted on the fifth day of the eleventh month of the first year of the Yongtai era [765 CE] by the Specially Advanced, Probationary Chamberlain for the Court of State Ceremonial, Great Broad Wisdom, the Tripiṭaka Master Amoghavajra, śramaṇa of Daxingshan Temple.
The Baoying Yuansheng Wenwu Emperor replied:
The Upādhyāya's Path lies hidden in the Twin Trees, and his meritorious deeds surpass the Right Awakening. Coming from afar out of India, he disseminated the true words. Recently, We have taken refuge [in him] and personally received the transmission. Precedence belongs to the ritual protocols for extolling and venerating [him]. May this increase the honour of the seal and ribbons, so as to give weight to the reverence between master and disciple, while extending imperial favors to manifest posthumous glory.

The Upādhyāya, the Tripiṭaka Master of Great Broad Wisdom Amoghavajra, was originally named Zhizang, and called Amoghavajra; in Sanskrit, Amoghavajra. He was originally a native of the Western Regions. In the past, he served the Upādhyāya, the Tripiṭaka Master of Great Propagation of the Teaching Vajrabodhi, and received the true words. For twenty-four years, he lifted his robes to request instruction. After the Great Master passed away, he returned to the Five Indias, where he thoroughly read through the Sanskrit texts of Yoga. Having traveled everywhere and examined everything, he returned to the imperial capital. At times he converted Hexi; at times he resided south of the ranges; at times he dwelt in Guannei; at times he stayed in the imperial palace. In translating the true scriptures, he had no leisure to sleep or eat. Toward the final years of the Tianbao era, barbarian cavalry entered the passes. In the second year of the Zhide era, the two capitals were recovered. The Upādhyāya personally received the imperial decree to act as the abhiṣeka master. Consorts and princesses descended the steps, and the ladies of the six palaces bowed in rows. Receiving imperial favors throughout three reigns, he constantly established bodhimaṇḍas. Scrutinizing the profound and subtle, the scrolls never left his hand. As for those translated inside the palace, as soon as they were completed, they were presented to the emperor; some were already promulgated, while others were retained within the forbidden palace. Those that have been obtained are fully catalogued as above; those that have not yet been acquired will be sought out wholeheartedly.
The Upādhyāya was diligent and tireless across many years. When it came to the ninth year of the Dali era, he manifested a slight illness. Imperial commissioners were sent with solicitous inquiries, and the court dispatched famous physicians; acupuncture and medicines were administered continually from morning to night. As the illness showed no sign of abating, the Emperor was uneasy. Imperial grace was specially extended, conferring an official title upon him. The imperial edict stated: "The operation of the Great Way joins together in extraordinary manifestations; the supreme governance of monarchs converges entirely within the Right Dharma. Just as the Parable of the Conjured City leads to the same destination, how could Confucianism and Buddhism take divergent paths? Therefore, the emperors and monarchs of past generations have never failed to esteem and revere them; the great promulgation of the teaching of the Dharma proceeds hand in hand with the times. The Specially Advanced, Probationary Chamberlain for the Court of State Ceremonial, Tripiṭaka Śramaṇa of Daxingshan Temple, Great Broad Wisdom, Amoghavajra, is our ancestral master, a ferryboat to humankind. He has transcendently awakened to the three trainings and sits apart from views…"
