20.22.1

Mahāratnakūṭa Section: 120 fascicles, 12 cases.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of South India under the Great Tang; newly compiled into the catalogue.
The above sūtra combines new and old, duplicate and single translations, making 49 assemblies united into one corpus. (Between new and old there are 20 assemblies of single translations, and between new and old 29 assemblies of duplicate translations. Among these, 26 assemblies are newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang, and 23 assemblies are ancient translations and earlier Tang translations collated against the Indic text by Bodhiruci and, matching it, incorporated into the assembly sequence. They are fully listed below.)

Assembly 1: The Assembly of the Three Moral Codes, 3 fascicles.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang; second translation.
The above new translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the old Dafangguang sanjie jing. Fascicles 1 through 3.

Assembly 2: The Assembly of Boundless Adornment, 4 fascicles.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang.
The above new translation is a single version. Fascicles 4 through 7.

Assembly 3: The Assembly of the Guhyaka-vajradhara, 7 fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Dharmarakṣa of the Western Jin; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above old translation is a single version. Fascicles 8 through 14.

Assembly 4: The Assembly of the Devaputra of the Śuddhāvāsa, 2 fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Dharmarakṣa of the Western Jin; recorded in Fashang's catalogue; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above old translation was originally a single version titled Pusa shuomeng jing, now newly renamed Assembly of the Devaputra of the Śuddhāvāsa. Fascicles 15 and 16. (Upon close examination of the phrasing, it is somewhat dissimilar to Dharmarakṣa's sūtras. Catalogues such as Changfang's all state that the translator's name was lost; Fashang's catalogue states that it was produced by Dharmarakṣa. For now, it is recorded according to Fashang's catalogue.)

Assembly 5: The Assembly of Amitāyus Tathāgata, 2 fascicles.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang.
The above new translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the old Wuliang qingjing pingdengjue jing, Amituo jing, Wuliangshou jing, etc. [Fascicles 17 and] 18.

Assembly 6: The Assembly of Akṣobhya Tathāgata, 2 fascicles.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang; second translation.
The above new translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the old Achu foguo jing, etc. Fascicles 19 and 20.

Assembly 7: The Assembly of the Armor-clad Adornment, 5 fascicles.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang.
The above new translation is a single version. Fascicles 21 through 25.

Assembly 8: The Assembly of the Non-differentiation of the Dharmadhātu's Nature, 2 fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Mandrasena of the Liang; second translation; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above old translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the Fajie tixing jing translated by Kumārajīva of the Yao Qin. Fascicles 26 and 27. (The Qin translation.)

Assembly 9: The Assembly of the Ten Dharmas of the Mahāyāna, 1 fascicle.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Buddhasānta of the Northern Wei; second translation; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above old translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the Dacheng shifa jing translated by Saṃghabhara (Zhongkai) of the Liang (the one that opens with "Bhagavat"). Fascicle 28. (Attributing this version to Saṅghapāla is an error.)

Assembly 10: The Assembly of Mañjuśrī's Universal Gate, 1 fascicle.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang; second translation.
The above new translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the old Pumenpin jing, etc. Fascicle 29.

Assembly 11: The Assembly of the Manifestation of Light, 5 fascicles.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang.
The above new translation is a single version. Fascicles 30 through 34.

Assembly 12: The Assembly of the Bodhisattvapiṭaka, 20 fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang of the Great Tang; recorded in the Neidian lu; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above earlier Tang translation is a single version. Fascicles 35 through 54. (As for this Assembly of the Bodhisattvapiṭaka, the Great Zhou Catalogue classifies it under duplicate translations, taking it as a different translation of the same text as the three-fascicle Pusa zang jing, which is a gross error. Although the titles are the same, their lengths are completely different; upon checking the text and meaning, they diverge even further. That three-fascicle Pusa zang is also incorporated into this collection: namely, it is the Assembly of Pūrṇa. It has now been emended from the old [listing] and definitively taken as a single translation.)

Assembly 13: The Assembly of the Buddha Explaining the Dwelling in the Womb to Ānanda, 1 fascicle.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang; second translation.
The above new translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the old Baotai jing. Fascicle 55.

Assembly 14: The Assembly of the Buddha Explaining Entry into the Womb, 3 fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Yijing of the Great Tang; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above earlier Tang translation is a single version. Fascicles 56 and 57. (This Assembly of Entry into the Womb was originally titled Fo wei Nantuo shuo chujia rutai jing, found in fascicles 11 and 12 of the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya Kṣudrakavastu. The Tripiṭaka Master Yijing extracted it to circulate separately. Now Bodhiruci has collated it with the Indic text and, matching it, incorporated it into the assembly sequence. Since it was not re-translated, it is a single version. Furthermore, with regard to the story in the Zabaocang jing of Nanda being pressed by the Buddha into leaving household life, although the beginning is slightly similar, the subsequent text is completely different; it is improper to consider it a duplicate translation. By its text and doctrine, both this assembly and the preceding assembly properly belong to the Śrāvakapiṭaka; now, having been incorporated into the Ratnakūṭa, they are comprehensively subsumed under the Bodhisattvapiṭaka.)

Assembly 15: The Assembly of Mañjuśrī's Prediction, 3 fascicles.
Translated under the Heavenly Empress of the Great Tang by the Tripiṭaka Master Śikṣānanda of Khotan; third translation; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above earlier Tang translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the old Wenshushili fotu yanjing jing. Fascicles 58 through 60.

Assembly 16: The Assembly of the Bodhisattva Seeing Reality, 16 fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Narendrayaśas of the Northern Qi; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above old translation is a single version. Fascicles 61 through 76.

Assembly 17: The Assembly of Pūrṇa, 3 fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Kumārajīva of the Yao Qin; second translation; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above old translation is a duplicate version, originally titled Pusa zang jing or Dabeixin jing, being a different translation of the same text as the Pusa zang jing translated by Dharmarakṣa of the Western Jin. Fascicles 77 through 79. (The Jin translation is lost.)

Assembly 18: The Assembly of the Bodhisattva Rāṣṭrapāla, 2 fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Jñānagupta of the Sui; recorded in the Neidian lu; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above old translation is a single version. Fascicles 80 and 81.

Assembly 19: The Assembly of the Elder Ugra, 1 fascicle.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Saṅghavarman of the Cao Wei; third translation; collated, matched, and incorporated.
The above old translation is a duplicate version, being a different translation of the same text as the Fajing jing and Youjialuoyue wen pusaxing jing, etc. Fascicle 82. (Attributing this version to Kang Sengyi is an error.)

Assembly 20: The Assembly of the Inexhaustible Hidden Treasury, 2 fascicles.
Newly translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Great Tang.
The above new translation is a single version. Fascicles 83 and 84.

20.22.2

The above newly translated single version forms the 86th and 87th fascicles.

The above newly translated duplicate version is a different translation of the same text as the older *Fajue jingxin jing*. It forms the 91st and 92nd fascicles.

The 26th Assembly: Bodhisattva Subāhu, in two fascicles.
Translated by Kumārajīva, Tripiṭaka master of the Later Qin; appears in Fashang's catalogue; compared, matched, and included.
The above older translation of a single version forms the 93rd and 94th fascicles. (Regarding this Subāhu Assembly, the Great Zhou Catalogue states that it is a different translation of the same text as the *Chiren pusa jing* and the *Chishi jing Shanjian pin jing*; this is incorrect. When one now investigates its textual meaning, its purport is utterly different from the *Chiren jing* and the others. That *Shanjian jing* was excerpted from the *Subāhu-sūtra*, being of the same class as the "Universal Gateway Chapter" of the *Lotus Sūtra*. Since there are such differences, it is counted as a single translation.)

The 27th Assembly: Bodhisattva Surūpa, in one fascicle.
Newly translated by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka master of the Great Tang.
The above newly translated single version forms the 95th fascicle.

The 30th Assembly: The Maiden Sumati, together with the following, in one fascicle.
Newly translated by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka master of the Great Tang; fourth translation.
The above newly translated duplicate version is a different translation of the same text as the two older translations of the *Xumoti jing* and Bodhiruci's earlier translated *Miaohui tongnü jing*. It forms the 98th fascicle from the beginning to the middle. (That earlier translated copy of the *Miaohui jing* was in the Eastern Capital; a search for it has not yet recovered it.)

The 31st Assembly: The Upāsikā Gaṅgottarā, in the same fascicle as the preceding.
Newly translated by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka master of the Great Tang.
The above newly translated single version forms the 98th fascicle from the middle to the end.

The 32nd Assembly: Bodhisattva Aśokadattā, in one fascicle.
Translated by Buddhaśānta, Tripiṭaka master of the Northern Wei; fifth translation; compared, matched, and included.

The 33rd Assembly: Bodhisattva Vimaladattā's Eloquence, in one fascicle.
Translated by the upāsaka Nie Daozhen under the Western Jin; second translation; compared, matched, and included.
The above older translation of a duplicate version is a different translation of the same text as the *Litoushi nü jing* and *De wugou nü jing*. It forms the 100th fascicle. (The attribution on copies of this sūtra to Dharmarakṣa is an error; the *Litoushi nü jing* was translated by Dharmarakṣa, as is shown below.)

The 34th Assembly: Bodhisattva Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, together with the following, in one fascicle.
Newly translated by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka master of the Great Tang.
The above newly translated single version forms the 101st fascicle from the beginning to the middle.

The 35th Assembly: The Devaputra Suvicintitamati, in the same fascicle as the preceding.
Newly translated by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka master of the Great Tang; second translation.
The above newly translated duplicate version is a different translation of the same text as the *Wenshushili suoshuo busiyi fo jingjie jing* earlier translated by Bodhiruci. It forms the 101st fascicle from the middle to the end.

The 36th Assembly: The Devaputra Susthitamati, in four fascicles.
Translated by Dharmagupta, Tripiṭaka master of the Sui; appears in the Neidian lu; seventh translation; compared, matched, and included.

The 39th Assembly: Elder Bhadrapāla, in two fascicles.
Translated by Jñānagupta, Tripiṭaka master of the Sui; first translation; compared, matched, and included.
The above older translation of a duplicate version was originally titled the *Yishi jing*, and is now newly retitled the Assembly of the Elder Bhadrapāla. (The original *Yishi jing* had no preface of credible attestation; the one now in the *Baoji* was newly added.) It is a different translation of the same text as the *Xianshi jing*. It forms the 109th and 110th fascicles. (When this Bhadrapāla Assembly was compiled using the *Yishi jing*, some copies of the sūtra had been changed to incorporate the *Xianshi jing*. Although the Indic texts of the two sūtras do not differ, to substitute them arbitrarily is, in my humble opinion, impermissible.)

The 40th Assembly: The Maiden Śraddhā, together with the following three assemblies, in the same fascicle.
Newly translated by Bodhiruci of the Great Tang.
The above newly translated single version forms the beginning of the 111th fascicle.

It forms the middle of the 111th fascicle. (For this Eight Dharmas Assembly, there is a translated treatise in five fascicles; the text of the *Yao hui jing* merely contains minor corruptions and omissions.)

Newly translated by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka master of the Great Tang; third translation.
The above newly translated duplicate version is a different translation of the same text as the older translated *Mile pusa suowen benyuan jing* and others. It forms the end of the 111th fascicle. (In the sūtra

20.22.3

those titled as translated by Dharmarakṣa of the Western Jin are erroneous; the old *Original Vows Sūtra* is indeed the translation by Dharmarakṣa, as shown below).
Assembly 43: Assembly of Samantaprabhā Bodhisattva, one fascicle. Old translation.
Now appended to the Qin catalogue. Compared with the Indic text and incorporated. Third translation.
The above is an old translation of an alternative version, originally the single-fascicle *Mahāratnakūṭa-sūtra*, newly retitled *Assembly of Samantaprabhā Bodhisattva*. It is an alternative translation of the same text as the two sūtras *Moheyan baoyan* (*Mahāyāna Ratnālaṃkāra*) and *Fo yiri moni bao* (*The Sun-Left Mani Jewel of the Buddha*). It corresponds to fascicle 112. This old Ratnakūṭa sūtra has an explanatory commentary in four fascicles.
Assembly 44: Assembly of the Heap of Jewels (Ratnarāśi), two fascicles.

It extends from the middle of fascicle 115 to the end of fascicle 116. Those manuscripts titled as translated by Saṅghapāla are in error.
Assembly 47: Assembly of Ratnacūḍa Bodhisattva, two fascicles.
Translated by Dharmarakṣa, Tripiṭaka master of the Western Jin.
The above is an old translation of an alternative version, also called *Sūtra on the Pure Practices of Bodhisattvas*. It is an alternative translation of the same text as the *Ratnacūḍa Chapter* of the *Mahāsaṃnipāta* and the *Sūtra on the Pure Practices of Bodhisattvas* produced by Kang Senghui. It corresponds to fascicles 117 and 118. This Ratnacūḍa Assembly has an explanatory commentary in one fascicle.
Assembly 48: Assembly of Queen Śrīmālā, one fascicle.
Newly translated by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka master of the Great Tang. Third translation.
The above is a new translation of an alternative version, being an alternative translation of the same text as the old *Śrīmālādevī-siṃhanāda-eka-yāna-mahā-upāya-nirdeśa-sūtra* and others. It corresponds to fascicle 119.
Assembly 49: Assembly of the Sage Vyāsa, one fascicle.
Newly translated by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka master of the Great Tang. Second translation.
The above is a new translation of an alternative version, being an alternative translation of the same text as the old *Vyāsa-paripṛcchā-sūtra*. It corresponds to fascicle 120 (when comparing this new translation with the old sūtra, the latter part of its text is incomplete, lacking nearly one sheet; some have spliced the old sūtra into it, intending to make its meaning fully complete).
*Sūtra on the Three Moral Codes of Great Scope*, three fascicles.
Translated by Dharmakṣema, Tripiṭaka master from India, under the Northern Liang. Taken from the Fashang Catalogue. First translation.
The above single sūtra is an alternative translation of the same text as the Ratnakūṭa's first assembly, the *Assembly of the Three Moral Codes*.
*Sūtra of Immeasurable Purity and Equal Awakening*, two fascicles (also simply called *Sūtra of Immeasurable Purity*).
Translated by Lokakṣema, Tripiṭaka master from the Yuezhi, under the Later Han. Second translation.
*Amitābha-sūtra*, two fascicles (the internal title reads *Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha on the Transmutation into the Human Realm by the Buddhas, Amitābha, the Perfectly Awakened Ones, and All Buddhas*).

Translated under imperial order by the Tripiṭaka master, the monk Daguangzhi Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Monastery.
Newly entered into the catalogue in Zhenyuan.
*Sūtra on the Ten Dharmas of the Mahāyāna*, one fascicle. The opening states: "The Buddha was dwelling in Rājagṛha."
Translated by Saṅghapāla, Tripiṭaka master from Funan, under the Liang. Supplemented and incorporated. First translation.

The above single sūtra is an alternative translation of the same text as the Ratnakūṭa's tenth assembly, the *Assembly on the Universal Gate of Mañjuśrī* (the Zhou Catalogue took it to be an offshoot extract of the *Lotus Sūtra*, which is an egregious error. Of three translations, new and old, one is missing).
*Womb Sūtra*, one fascicle. Also named *Sūtra on Receiving a Body in the Womb*.
Translated by Dharmarakṣa, Tripiṭaka master of the Western Jin. First translation.
The above single sūtra is an alternative translation of the same text as the Ratnakūṭa's thirteenth assembly, the *Assembly of the Buddha Explaining the Dwelling in the Womb to Ānanda* (according to old catalogues, this *Womb Sūtra* was catalogued as a single Hīnayāna translation; it is now appended here by following its class).
*Sūtra on the Adornment and Purification of the Buddha-field of Mañjuśrī*, three fascicles (sometimes simply called *Sūtra on Purifying the Buddha-field*, or simply *Adornment and Purification of the Buddha-field*).

The above two sūtras are alternative translations of the same text as the Ratnakūṭa's nineteenth assembly, the *Assembly of the Elder Ugra*.

The above single sūtra is an alternative translation of the same text as the Ratnakūṭa's twenty-first assembly, the *Assembly of the Bestowal of Prophecy on the Magician*.
*Sūtra on the Decisive Vinaya*, one fascicle. Also named *Destroying All Mind and Consciousness*.

The above single sūtra is an alternative translation of the same text as the Ratnakūṭa's twenty-fourth assembly, the *Assembly of Upāli*.
*Sūtra on Inspiring the Pure Resolve*, two fascicles.
