As for the Vinaya Piṭaka, the sūtra states that it is [preeminent] because it is supreme, secret, and formulated exclusively by the Buddha. Just as in the sūtras, where disciples preach the Dharma, or deities preach the Dharma, the Vinaya is not like this: all of it was spoken by the Buddha. Since ancient times, the various catalogues have all classified the Mātṛkā, Samantapāsādikā, and the like under the authentic Vinaya Piṭaka. Reflecting upon this now, I fear this may not be appropriate. These works were all composed and expounded by sages and worthies according to their respective schools after the schisms; they were not spoken directly from the Buddha's golden mouth, nor were they compiled in the councils of the thousand holy ones. In compiling the present catalogue, I have divided it into two categories: the first clarifies the authentic Vinaya Piṭakas of the five schools; the second clarifies the treatises as accessories to the Vinaya. It is hoped that root and branch will not be confused, and that origin and developments will be kept distinct. May men of discernment graciously correct it.
