The above forty-two works in forty-four fascicles.
Now, the teachings of the Śākya originated in India. The Western Regions and the eastern borders are separated by heaven in customs and standards. Their spoken languages differ in the tones of Chu and Xia; their scripts are not in the seal or clerical style. For this reason, we rely on translations from them to imbibe the pure breeze. However, mantras are profound and recondite; each syllable has deep meaning. When meaning changes according to sound, errors easily arise in broad and close phonetic matches. One catches only a vague semblance and fails to attain the exact clarity. Without Sanskrit characters, long and short sounds are hard to distinguish. Does not the intention of preserving the source lie right here?
