爾時，諸大眾俱共僉然生疑，各相謂言：「四無所畏、十八不共法、五眼法身大覺世尊，前已為我等大眾，二十九年說摩訶般若波羅蜜、金剛般若波羅蜜、天王問般若波羅蜜、光讚般若波羅蜜。今日如來放大光明，斯作何事？」時十六大國王中，舍衛國主波斯匿王名曰月光，德行十地，六度、三十七品、四不壞淨，行摩訶衍化，次第問居士寶蓋法、淨名等八百人；復問須菩提、舍利弗等五千人；復問彌勒、師子吼等十千人，無能答者。

At that time, the entire assembly together gave rise to doubt and said to one another: "The Greatly Awakened Bhagavat, possessed of the four fearlessnesses, the eighteen distinctive dharmas, and the five-eyed dharma body, previously expounded for us, the great assembly, for twenty-nine years the Mahāprajñāpāramitā, the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā, the Prajñāpāramitā of the Questions of the Heavenly King, and the Prajñāpāramitā of the Praise of Light. Why does the Tathāgata emit such a great light today?" At that time, among the sixteen great kings, the lord of Śrāvastī, King Prasenajit, named Candraprabha, who practiced the virtues of the ten stages, the six pāramitās, the thirty-seven factors of awakening, and the four kinds of indestructible pure faith, and who practiced the conversion of the Mahāyāna, successively questioned eight hundred people including the householders Ratnachatra-dharma and Vimalakīrti; he also questioned five thousand people including Subhūti and Śāriputra; he also questioned ten thousand people including Maitreya and Siṃhanāda, yet none was able to answer.
