[King Prasenajit] said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One! How can bodhisattvas who protect the practice of the ten stages practice what may be practiced? How do they practice so as to convert sentient beings? By what characteristics may sentient beings be converted?"
The Buddha said: "Great King! The five patiences are the bodhisattva dharma: subduing patience in superior, middling, and lower [grades]; faith patience in superior, middling, and lower [grades]; compliance patience in superior, middling, and lower [grades]; non-arising patience in superior, middling, and lower [grades]; and quiescent cessation patience in superior and lower [grades]. These are called the practice of prajñāpāramitā by all buddhas and bodhisattvas.
