At that time, the Buddha addressed the Great King: "Listen well, all of you! I shall now explain properly the ritual method for protecting the state. You should uphold the prajñāpāramitā. When the state is about to fall into turmoil, when kalpa-fires bring destruction, or when bandits come to devastate the realm, you should invite one hundred images of buddhas, one hundred images of bodhisattvas, one hundred images of arhats, and an assembly of one hundred bhikṣus; let the four assemblies and the seven assemblies listen together; invite one hundred dharma masters to lecture on the prajñāpāramitā. Before the one hundred lion-roar high seats, light one hundred lamps, burn blended incense of one hundred varieties, and offer flowers of one hundred colors to make offerings to the Three Jewels. Provide the three robes and daily utensils to the dharma masters, and offer light breakfast and midday meals in accordance with the proper times. Great King! Lecture on and recite this sūtra twice a day. In your state there are one hundred classes of ghosts and spirits, and each of these classes further has one hundred divisions who delight in hearing this sūtra; these ghosts and spirits will protect your state.
