“Good sons! From the patience of habituation up to the summit samādhi, all are called subduing all defilements. With faith devoid of characteristics, they extinguish all defilements and produce the wisdom of liberation; illuminating the ultimate truth is not yet called ‘seeing’. What is called ‘seeing’ is omniscience (sarvajñā). For this reason, from the past until now, I have always said that only buddhas know, see, and awaken [to it]. From below the summit samādhi down to the patience of habituation, that which is not known, not seen, and not awakened to, is only suddenly understood by buddhas; it is not called faith. As for those who gradually subdue [defilements]: although their wisdom arises and ceases, because they are capable of non-production and non-cessation, once this mind ceases, there are no entanglements that are not extinguished. Being unproduced and unceasing, they enter the diamond samādhi that reaches the ultimate principle, identical with bhūta-koṭi and equal to dharmatā, yet not yet equal to the unequalled. It is just like someone climbing a high terrace and looking down upon everything, leaving nothing not clearly perceived; abiding in the samādhi reaching the ultimate principle is just like this. Constantly practicing all deeds to fulfill the treasury of merit, they enter the bhagavat position, and also constantly abide in the samādhi of buddha wisdom.
