"Great King! After my parinirvāṇa, in future ages, the fourfold assembly of disciples and the kings, crown princes, and royal princes of various small states—who ought to be the ones upholding and protecting the Three Jewels—will instead destroy and ruin the Three Jewels. Just like the worms within a lion's body that feed upon the lion itself, it is not non-Buddhists [who destroy it]. Causing vast destruction to my Buddha-Dharma, they will incur immense guilt; the true teaching will decline and weaken, the people will lack right conduct, and gradually turning to evil, their lifespans will diminish day by day until they reach a hundred years. When people ruin the Buddha's teaching, there will no longer be filial sons, the six relations will be in discord, heavenly spirits will not grant protection, epidemics and evil ghosts will arrive daily to cause harm, calamities and oddities will occur one after another, misfortunes will be interlinked across the land, and upon death they will enter the hells, hungry ghosts, and animals; if they emerge to become human, their retribution will be as soldiers or slaves, just as an echo answers a sound; or like a person writing at night: though the fire is extinguished, the writing remains. The retributions of the three realms are also just like this.
