The Buddha told Subhūti: "All bodhisattva-mahāsattvas should subdue their minds thus: As for all classes of sentient beings—whether born from eggs, born from wombs, born from moisture, or born of transformation; whether possessing form or lacking form; whether with thought or without thought; whether neither with thought nor without thought—I cause them all to enter anupadhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa and cross over to extinction. Even though measureless, countless, and boundless sentient beings are thus crossed over to extinction, in truth there are no sentient beings who attain extinction. Why is this? Subhūti, if a bodhisattva has the notion of a self, the notion of a person, the notion of a sentient being, or the notion of a soul, then they are not a bodhisattva."
