"Subhūti, what do you think? Can an arhat think: 'I have attained the path of an arhat'?"
Subhūti said, "No, Bhagavat. Why is this? In truth, there is no dharma called an arhat. Bhagavat, if an arhat were to think, 'I have attained the path of an arhat,' that would be clinging to a self, a person, a sentient being, and a soul.
Bhagavat, the Buddha has declared that among those who attain the samādhi of non-contention, I am foremost; I am the foremost arhat free from desire. I do not think, 'I have attained the path of an arhat.' Bhagavat, [if I did,] the Buddha would not say that Subhūti is one who delights in the practice of araṇā. Because Subhūti in truth practices nothing, he is called 'Subhūti who delights in the practice of araṇā.'"
