Sūtra: 'The Buddha said: "Subhūti, a unitary composite is ineffable."' The Exposition states: The later reaffirmation by the Buddha has two parts: first clarifying its non-existence in the ultimate sense, and second clarifying its existence in conventional truth. This is the first. That is, the Buddha thoroughly realized that the mark of grasping a lump regarding form and the name-body does not exist in the ultimate sense, cannot be spoken of in words, and cannot be conceptualized by a mind of conceptual proliferation, because the path of mind and speech is cut off. The Zhenguan [translation] says: 'It cannot be spoken of, it cannot be conceptually proliferated.' This treatise says: 'Because the World-Honoured One accomplished such a meaning, he spoke of grasping a lump as that which cannot be spoken of in words, etc.' What does this reveal? Because of conventional worldly speech there is that grasping of a lump; because of the paramārtha it is ineffable. In that treatise, the second part, the Tathāgata's explanation and confirmation, has two parts: first that its substance is truly non-existent, and second that it exists through delusional clinging. This is the first: because the mark of aggregation lacks substantial nature, it is ineffable.
