The Sūtra [states]: "Subhūti, ... up to ... dismembered my body." / Exposition: The explanation below is divided into two: first, clarifying the place where patience arises; second, directly clarifying the characteristic of patience. This is the first. That is to say, this place of others, the perfection of patience, non-perfection, and all other phenomena serve as the places of arising. Namely, regarding the place of others, one gives rise to the patience of bearing injury, which is non-hatred; regarding the perfection of patience and all phenomena, one does not give rise to notions of existence and non-existence, which is the patience of thoroughly examining phenomena, being discerning wisdom; therefore, the place of arising for the patience of peacefully accepting suffering is omitted. This, then, is the place of arising for the patience of bearing injury. As for the word "Kali," here it is translated as "patient under injury," because he was able to endure peacefully when acts of injury were committed, hence he was named "Patient under Injury." The Record of the Western Regions says King of Strife (Kali-rāja); the pronunciation differs in other versions, but the name is not different. The account of these causes and conditions is extensive as in other places.
