The preface states: The ultimate reality is vast and boundless; its principle is […] the sublime enlightenment is deep and mysterious, fundamentally devoid of words and speech. Yet that discourse was raised in the realm of no-discourse, and names were established in the sphere of no-names, is truly because the dark road has not yet dawned and the sea of views has long been submerged; thus [the teachings] are used as a torch [for the night], as a ford and boat [for] the dark barrier and all beings. How great indeed is the efficacy of the arising of the teaching! How much more so is this true for Prajñā, the mother of all Buddhas, and the indestructible phrases of the Vajra! Encompassing all divisions, it stands alone; surpassing the multitude of sūtras, it soars far above. Through the three questions and nine similes, it elucidates from beginning to end; through [dispelling] the eight attachments and five perversions, mind and speech are swept away and extinguished. With [the Buddha’s] mindful protection and entrustment, how could the Way be walked in vain?
