Sūtra: “Why is this? [...] this is named mental abiding.”
Exposition: Third, querying and explaining the reason. Within this there are four questions and answers querying and explaining. This is the first query: the manifold minds are difficult to see, yet he fully knows them; what is the reason? In the answer, the Wei version says: "The Tathāgata speaks of all mental abidings as non-mental abidings; this is named mental abiding." The Zhenguan version says "stream of mind": "As for the stream of mind, the Tathāgata speaks of it as non-stream; therefore the Tathāgata speaks of it as named the stream of mind." The commentary on the stream of mind says: "The stream of mind refers to the minds of the three times. As for the manifold different minds, it should be known that there are two kinds: defiled and pure, which are the mind accompanied by desire, the mind separated from desire, and so forth. 'Times' refers to past and other periods. It is because the paramārtha is established within these two."
