Sūtra: [Subhūti replied,] "Subhūti [...] observe the Tathāgata." / Commentary: The second part is the answer. Yet, according to the abode of serving and attending upon the Tathāgata, Subhūti answered that one should not see [the Tathāgata] by marks; why is this answer different from the earlier one? Furthermore, the other five translations of the sūtra all say that one should not observe the Tathāgata by the various marks; why is this text alone different from the other versions? Answer: The Sanskrit texts had differences, but the meaning is without contradiction. Why so? The earlier one was an answer according to the real principle, whereas this is a provisional answer to bring out and reveal the Tathāgata's true and subtle meaning. Moreover, the principle is twofold: first, conventional; second, ultimate. Although the ultimate is without marks, within conventional truth one can clearly observe the Tathāgata by the thirty-two marks. The Buddha questioned based on the ultimate; this was answered according to the conventional.
