Sūtra: “Subhūti, if a bodhisattva […] practiced generosity with the seven jewels…”
Exposition: The following explains not abiding in transmigration. The text is divided into two: first, explaining that receiving merit is not troubled by suffering; next, explaining that receiving retribution does not involve abiding attachment. Within the first, there are again two: first presenting the inferior, and then revealing the superior. This is the first. Zhenguan states: “Offering to the Tathāgatas, Arhats, and Samyaksaṃbuddhas makes clear that when ordinary people give to the Buddha, this supreme cause induces the retributions of wheel-turning kings, Śakra, Brahmā, and the like, which are not even oppressed by suffering; how much less the supreme merit of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas!” The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra states: “Even a wheel-turning sage king, due to his modest merit, is free from illness, etc.”
