Sūtra: Subhūti, you should know [...] is inconceivable. Exposition: The third [part]: what kind of person is able to expound it. The commentary says: "Who can expound these three majesties and their abundance? Therefore the sūtra says: '...' This shows that the essence of that merit and its fruit cannot be measured." The meaning is that the essence of the causal merit of the sūtra's words and meaning, as well as the fruits attained, are all beyond thought and speech, inconceivable, and difficult to comprehend. Who can expound it? Only the Buddha can know it; it is not what others can fathom. It encourages one simply to uphold and propagate it, which will bring superior fruits. The ninth [point] in that commentary states: "Accomplishing various kinds of power and obtaining great and wondrous retributions." Its explanation says: "Namely, gathering in the Four Heavenly Kings, Śakra Devānām Indra, the Brahmā Kings, and so forth, thereby accomplishing power." This concludes the section on what karmic activities are accomplished. Due to such matters, upholding the sūtra is superior. Question: Previously it was said that the sūtra's power can sever the contaminated and induce the dharmakāya; why does it now say that it attains the fruits of humans and gods? Answer: Just as uncontaminated karma assists transformation-birth, it is called "severing the contaminated" with reference to severing that [birth]; this is spoken according to the ultimate. What is to prevent it from serving as a distant condition that can induce worldly fruits?
