Sūtra: "Subhūti, that which the Tathāgata has attained […] is neither real nor unreal."
Exposition: Fourth: the negation of grasping at increase and decrease. The treatise says: "It reveals that tathatā is non-dual. How is it not real? It refers to verbal expression. How is it not false? It means that that correct awakening is not without worldly verbal expression." Exposition: "Non-dual" means the two of unreal and real. In tathatā, there is no real verbal expression, which negates the grasping at increase; yet it is not without conforming to worldly verbal teachings, which negates the grasping at decrease. This arises because previously it was said that the Buddha's attainment of bodhi is untrue speech, and then one would grasp that all speech is false; hence this text appears, stating that it is also not unreal speech. That treatise says: "If someone slanders in this way, saying that the Tathāgata did not attain anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi, to sever this doubt the sūtra says and so on. What does this mean? Because the Tathāgata attained that bodhi." Exposition: This slander arises following the previous text. Because the previous text stated that saying one attains bodhi is untrue speech, one then supposed that the Tathāgata did not attain bodhi; hence this text is present, which is also the same as this treatise. It further establishes that the Buddha attained bodhi, with the verse saying: "Because they are not real saṃskṛta marks." "Saṃskṛta marks" refers to the marks of the five aggregates; that bodhi dharma is devoid of the marks of form and so on. How is this further explained? The verse says:
