Sūtra: “Listen now attentively, and I shall explain it for you.”
Commentary: This is commanding them to listen and promising to expound. “Listen now attentively” is commanding them to listen; “I shall explain it for you” is promising to expound. “Attentive” (dì) means careful and precise, showing freedom from the three faults: distraction, contempt, and inversion, which correspond respectively to an overturned vessel, a leaking vessel, and a defiled vessel. Thus one can produce the three kinds of virtues, namely the superior three wisdoms arisen from listening, reflection, and cultivation. Through this alone is one capable of listening to and receiving the true Dharma. Therefore, a verse spoken in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra says:
“The listener sits upright like one hungry and thirsty, / Single-mindedly entering into the words and meanings, / Hearing the Dharma with leaping joy, heart moved with weeping and delight: / To such a person, one may expound it.”
Therefore, he first commands them to listen, and only then promises to expound.
