1.52

經。當知是人至而種善根　贊曰。次遇佛集妙因。於中有三。初非供少佛。次久事多尊。後舉劣況勝。此初也。言善根者。即前戒定。謂非少佛修戒定慧。非謂財供而種善根。財供養時。不以為喜。正行供養。方歡喜故。

Sūtra: “You should know that these people […] up to: have planted roots of goodness.”
Commentary: Next is having encountered Buddhas and accumulated wondrous causes. In this there are three parts: first, having made offerings not merely to a few Buddhas; next, having long served many Honored Ones; afterward, adducing the inferior to illustrate the superior. This is the first. “Roots of goodness” refers to the aforementioned morality and concentration; that is, they cultivated morality, concentration, and wisdom before not just a few Buddhas. It does not mean planting roots of goodness through material offerings. When making material offerings, one does not take that as joyful; only when making the offering of proper practice is there genuine joy.
