Sūtra: “Subhūti, […] does [the Tathāgata] possess the Buddha eye?” / Commentary: This asks about the Buddha eye. Because the path of awakening is complete, he is called "Buddha"; because he universally contemplates principle and phenomena, it is called the "eye." The Buddha eye has two aspects: general and specific. The general aspect brings together the preceding four eyes, formed like four rivers gathering into what is called the ocean. The specific aspect refers to the Buddha's body, taking effortless wisdom of all modes as its intrinsic nature. The previous four eyes are called "specific"; in the causal stages they have not yet penetrated all, their freedom from obstructions and seeing of objects are not yet complete, and their self-benefit and benefiting of others are still inferior. Bodhisattvas cultivate the Buddha eye so that these may become complete and supreme. Now, intending to show that the Buddha brings this purity of seeing to fulfillment, he first asks whether the Tathāgata possesses it or not.
