Sūtra: “Subhūti, […] speak of these sands?” / Commentary: Below clarifies the purity of wisdom. The preceding purity of seeing illuminates the essence of wisdom; this purity of wisdom illuminates the function of wisdom, because essence and function are distinct. Asaṅga states below that the two functions do not depart from the essence. Vasubandhu unifies them into one: namely, because of the purity of seeing, one can generate pure wisdom. Since it explains the diverse mental activities of sentient beings, leading their minds to leave all distraction and realize the true realm, it is called the abiding in the purity of wisdom. The text below comprises three parts: first, adducing what the wisdom can do; next, clarifying that the Buddha can know; and finally, inquiring into and explaining the reason. The first part also has four points: 1. discerning sands based on the river; 2. worlds based on the number of sands; 3. sentient beings based on the fruit; 4. minds based on sentient beings. This is the first. Relying on the conventional, wishing to reveal the many minds of phenomena, principle, and wisdom, the Tathāgata spoke like this, just as the Awakening of Faith speaks of space and boundless recompense.
