Sūtra: "World-Honoured One, the Tathāgata... this is called a world." Commentary: Below, Subhūti uses the simile of the world to reveal and cause one to know that the total aggregates are empty. Within this, there are three parts: first, stating the topic; second, raising the inquiry; third, explaining. This is the first. The three-thousandfold world spoken of by the Tathāgata is a globally aggregated world, formed by accumulating subtle parts; it illustrates that internal body of the world of sentient beings, formed largely by gathering the five aggregates. "Is not a world": because what is so formed has no real substance, the internal also has no intrinsic nature. "Is called a world": it is merely conventionally called a world. Because it is a conventional designation, by using the external world as a simile to contemplate that the internal body has no real marks, one can depart from clinging and delusion. Furthermore, just as the external world is formed by gathering many subtle parts and has no essential mark, yet can arouse that collection of atoms and is therefore called a world, so the revealed Dharmakāya is formed by gathering the myriad virtues and has no marks, yet because it can arouse them, it is called the transformation body.
