Sūtra: "Yet ordinary people take it that there is a self." / Commentary: This is the ordinary person's grasping existence. The Buddha knows that self is non-existent and is completely without self-grasping, yet the foolish ordinary people give rise to minds of deviant views, falsely speaking of it as existing and arbitrarily producing actual grasping. The Tathāgata, wishing to reveal that there is no self to be grasped and that it is merely deluded grasping, speaks of it as self-grasping. Because they deludedly grasp where there is nothing to be grasped, the preceding verse says: 'One should know non-grasping and grasping.'
