Sūtra: “If the mind has an abiding, it is non-abiding.” Commentary: This is negating in a reverse manner. Because he previously enjoined not generating a mind [abiding in] forms and the rest, he therefore exhorted that one should produce a mind that does not abide anywhere; he did not mean that one should further abide in the mark of a non-abiding mind. If one abides in the mark of non-abiding, that too is producing a mind, and thus constitutes non-abiding [in truth]. For true abiding has no abiding whatsoever. If one is without abiding, one tallies with the true principle; this very true principle is the Buddha’s bodhi. If the mind abides in the marks of forms and the rest, that mind does not abide in the Buddha’s bodhi.
