Sūtra: At that time, Subhūti, having heard this sūtra preached and deeply understanding its essential meaning, wept tears of sorrow and said: This is the third [part], understanding and realization. The text also has two parts: first, understanding and realization; second, praising the superiority. This is the first part of the text. As for 'wept tears of sorrow': ti means to fall; lei means eye-fluid; deep sorrow in the spirit is called bei; tears falling without a sound is called qi. That Subhūti, having heard the profound teaching of the expresser and understood the profound meaning of the expressed, and furthermore having heard that relinquishing lives as numerous as the sands of the Ganges is not equal to upholding a single four-line verse of this sūtra, therefore recollected the suffering of those who renounce their bodies, and suddenly his sorrow increased; out of sincere and earnest respect for the Dharma, his tears fell streamingly. Question: When one hears a sūtra and awakens to understanding, one ought to rejoice; why did he weep sorrowfully? Answer: There is awakening to understanding that gives rise to sorrow, as when Subhūti heard this sūtra; there is awakening to understanding that gives rise to joy, as when Śāriputra heard the Lotus Sūtra; there is awakening to understanding that gives rise to both sorrow and joy, as when King Saṃpūjita heard the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra, where sorrow and joy welled up together. Now, the reason Subhūti wept sorrowfully is that his ears partook of the correct teaching while his wisdom mirrored true suchness: first, he pitied the suffering of those who renounce their bodies; second, he rejoiced in what was now preached; third, he regretted that he had not heard it sooner; fourth, he lamented those who had not heard it. This is why he wept sorrowfully.
