Sūtra: The Buddha said to Subhūti, 'So it is, so it is! If there is a person who hears this sūtra and is not alarmed, not terrified, and not afraid, you should know that this person is exceedingly rare. Third, this recounts and praises. The words 'So it is, so it is' mean that what was spoken above is precisely its meaning, hence the words 'So it is, so it is'; these are words of approval. 'Hears this sūtra and is not alarmed, not terrified, and not afraid' refers to accomplishing faithful understanding. The treatise says: 'Alarmed' means generating fear where there is no cause for fear, and therefore it is called alarmed, because it is blameworthy, like walking on a non-path. 'Terrified' means the mind-substance itself is terrified, so having arisen it cannot be severed. One who has a doubting mind is 'afraid' because they are entirely terrified, for their mind will ultimately fall away in alarm and terror. Being free of these three kinds, hearing the sūtra with faithful understanding, is therefore called rare.
