[Sūtra:] "If the minds of these sentient beings grasp at marks, that is their clinging to a self, a person, a sentient being, and a soul." The subsequent text explains it. The text again has two parts: first general, and next specific. This text is the first. It universally adduces both clinging to existence and clinging to non-existence, and is therefore called "general." Indeed, clinging to dharmas is the cause and clinging to self is the effect. If clinging to dharmas is not severed, clinging to self will arise again; therefore it says, "if the mind grasps at marks," meaning grasping at the two kinds of marks, existence and non-existence. "That is their clinging to a self, a person, etc.": clinging to self arises based on this.
