[Sūtra:] "'Furthermore, Subhūti, wherever this sūtra is spoken, even down to a four-line gāthā, etc., you should know that that place should be made offerings to by all the worldly devas, humans, and asuras, just like a stūpa of the Buddha.'"
In the second major section, this explains the reason for its superiority. There are four parts in total: first, superiority due to the honored place; second, superiority due to identical teaching; third, superiority due to overcoming defilement; fourth, superiority due to surpassing the pure. Within the first, superiority due to the honored place, there are again four: first, determining the honor of the place; second, clarifying the superiority of the person; third, explaining both; fourth, questions and answers. This is the first, determining the honor of the place. Just as the place where a king resides does not depend on whether it is for a long or short time—even for a moment, all who see it venerate it—so too is the place where this sūtra is spoken: regardless of much or little, down to even a single gāthā, offerings should be made to it. Why is this so? Because this Mahāyāna Dharma is the king of all sūtras. "Devas, humans, and asuras" briefly adduces three among the six destinies. Because the meritorious karma of these three makes the meaning of offering prominent, they are specifically mentioned; as for the other three, their retributions for misdeeds involve much hindrance, so although a small portion may do so, they are omitted without discussion.
