[Sūtra:] "Subhūti, a bodhisattva should practice giving in this way, not abiding in characteristics:" The third part answers the question on subduing the mind. According to the Wei translation, it says "not abiding in the perception of characteristics". Here the word "perception" is omitted. In the text there are six parts: first, presentation; second, query; third, explanation; fourth, simile; fifth, application; sixth, exhortation. This text is the first part. If one gives rise to the perception of characteristics, the two kinds of grasping are not yet extinguished; seeking true emptiness will still result in the contaminated. Therefore, the bodhisattva eradicates false perceptions to purify the three wheels; hence, within the gate of giving, subduing [the mind] is further shown. "Not abiding in the perception of characteristics" means not perceiving the gift, the recipient, or the giver.
