[Sūtra:] "Subhūti, what do you think? Can the Tathāgata be seen by means of bodily marks?" Below, the second major division clarifies resolving doubts. According to the treatise below, doubts are general and specific: in general there are twenty-seven sections, and specifically there are thirty-two doubts. Although the treatise does not enumerate them with separate titles, we now take the treatise's meaning to briefly establish names. This is the first, named "the doubt regarding non-abiding being for the sake of buddhahood". In setting forth the doubt, the treatise says: "If one practices giving without abiding in dharmas, how does one practice giving for the sake of the Buddha's bodhi?" To resolve this doubt, the sūtra text has six parts: first, question; second, answer; third, query; fourth, explanation; fifth, recounting; sixth, conclusion. This is the first part, the question. It asks whether or not the true dharmakāya can be seen by means of the marks of the conditioned physical body, which has the three [characteristics of] arising, abiding-changing, and ceasing.
