[Sūtra:] "Subhūti, the Tathāgata fully knows and fully sees these sentient beings." The third explains the conditions for faith. Because of the Buddha's knowing and seeing, their faithful mind does not regress. Question: What is the difference between the two types, knowing and seeing? Answer: The fleshly eye is seeing and not knowing. Inferential knowledge is knowing and not seeing. Knowledge based on aspiration is both knowing and seeing. Because it differs from the fleshly eye, it is called "knowing." Because it differs from inferential knowledge, it is called "seeing." Therefore it is said, "fully knows and fully sees." Because of the Buddha's knowing and seeing, if there were someone who wished to obtain offerings and reverence and self-praised their own merit of keeping the precepts and so on, other persons would not be able to declare it, because that person knows it for themselves.
