[Sūtra:] "'Bhagavat, the Buddha said that I have attained araṇā-samādhi, foremost among men, and that I am the foremost arhat free from desire.'"
Third, citing oneself to provide proof and further clarify the matter. The text again has four [parts]: first, clarifying the Buddha's prior prediction; second, revealing that one does not grasp; third, explaining in reverse; fourth, affirming in accordance. This is the first, clarifying the Buddha's prior prediction. The term "araṇā" (non-contention) is an alternative name for meditative absorption (dhyāna/samādhi); "samādhi" is the general designation for meditative absorption. This samādhi is complete with compassion, capable of protecting oneself and others, remaining far removed from the contention of afflictions, and possesses supreme merit. Among those liberated both ways (ubhayatobhāga-vimukta) who are free from the obstruction of emptiness, Subhūti is supreme; hence he is called "foremost." The term "free from desire" means desire is craving; among all afflictions, craving's fault is particularly grave. Now, by raising what is grave to encompass what is light, this is freedom from the obstruction of afflictions.
