[Sūtra:] "The Buddha told Subhūti: 'What do you think? Formerly, when the Tathāgata was with the Buddha Dīpaṅkara, did he attain anything in dharma?'"

Hereafter, the fifth doubt is resolved. This is called the doubt concerning the bodhisattva attaining dharma. The Treatise states the doubt, saying: "Śākyamuni Tathāgata formerly received dharma from the Buddha Dīpaṅkara, and that Buddha taught dharma for this Buddha. If so, why is that dharma ungraspable and unspeakable?" To resolve this doubt, the sūtra text has two [parts]: question first, followed by answer. This is the initial question. Why the Tathāgata asked Subhūti in reverse is because he wished to clarify that buddhas and bodhisattvas have already realized suchness; within the dharma of suchness, how could there be grasping or speaking?
