The above explained the differences in roots and lineages. As for those addressed by the sūtra: if relying on the first explanation, there is no further dispute; but those of the five-lineage school must distinguish them. In terms of those primarily addressed, it is solely the superior vehicle, because the sūtra says: 'expounded for the sake of those who have set forth in the Great Vehicle,' which is what other sūtras call: 'expounded for bodhisattvas in response to the six pāramitās, now attaining sarvākārajñatā.' If in terms of those secondarily addressed, it extends to the two vehicles and those without lineage, because the four assemblies and eight classes [of beings] listed below are not excluded. The Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra says: 'Prajñāpāramitā is able to distinguish the stages of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas,' which is the passage on Jinadatta cited earlier, also addressing the two vehicles. Below this, the vast mind of the bodhisattva causes [beings of] the three realms and the four modes of birth to be completely brought to nirvāṇa. Bodhisattva Asaṅga asked: 'Why vow for this unattainable meaning?' The answer is: 'Because it encompasses sentient beings, there is no error.' This will be understood below.
