From “always with great compassion” onward is the overall praise of the four pairs. Regarding the four: first, taking wisdom as the expedient means is the beginning of practice, and spiritual penetrations are the root of transforming beings—wisdom and spiritual penetrations form one pair. Second, showing that within oneself discipline is accomplished, which benefits the outside—this is internal and external forming a pair. Third, starting from understanding and ultimately reaching the other shore, they can cause sentient beings to initially turn away from saṃsāra and ultimately return to nirvāṇa—this is considered in terms of beginning and end forming a pair. Fourth, their cultivation is unbroken and their requesting and receiving [the Dharma] are never abandoned, so they can constantly practice the One Vehicle and broadly liberate the multitude of beings—this is the fourth pair, benefiting oneself and benefiting beings.
