The second sub-clause praises the internal virtue of the Mahāyāna, whose measure of virtue is lofty and vast. From “their great compassion is deep, far-reaching, and subtly wondrous” down to “having no contamination in the world”: this praises the internal virtue of the Mahāyāna. Compassion can eradicate suffering; it is truly because the principle is profound and the virtue is wondrous that it can do so. “Nothing that is not sheltered and supported”: once the internal virtues are fully prepared, they are well able to shelter and support sentient beings. “Completely perfecting the One Vehicle, reaching the other shore”: completely perfecting the causal One Vehicle, one reaches the other shore of nirvāṇa. “Severing the net of doubt, wisdom arises from the mind”: decisively severing the net of doubt regarding the subtle afflictions of ignorance, the bright discernment of wisdom arises from the mind. “Regarding the Buddha's teachings, all-encompassing with nothing left out”: the Buddha's teachings are vast and extensive, encompassing all dharmas with none omitted. “Wisdom is like the great ocean”: below this there are twenty-three similes clarifying that the virtue of this Mahāyāna, the ocean of inner and outer transformation, has deep waters and vast extent, illuminating the wondrous principle of the Mahāyāna. The principle is deep, moistening, and broad; the wholesomeness of raising a hand or bowing the head all enters the ocean of the Mahāyāna. “Samādhi is like the king of mountains”: this clarifies that Mount Sumeru is made of the seven jewels and is indeed the king of all mountains, unmoved by the eight winds. This clarifies that this power of samādhi and concentration cannot be disturbed by any heterodoxies. From “the brightness of wisdom is pure” down to “uniformly pure”: this clarifies that the light of the Mahāyāna is complete, luminous, and pure, surpassing the two vehicles and the seventh bhūmi. “Just as the great earth has no differing mind toward pure and foul, good and evil”: the earth can bear all things, both good and evil; this clarifies that the goodness of the Mahāyāna is equal and non-dual, skillfully able to embrace and generate sentient beings of the three vehicles, just as the earth can produce all things. “Just as pure water deeply washes away all defilements of affliction”: water can wash away grime; the Mahāyāna can deeply remove the defilements of afflictions. “Just as the king of fire consumes all firewood of afflictions”: fire can burn firewood; this clarifies that the Dharma of the Mahāyāna can incinerate the firewood of afflictions.
