Sūtra: Due to having heard that […] name. / Fourth, due to having heard the name in the past. Because of hearing the name of Bhaiṣajyaguru Tathāgata, one enters the group of definite correctness and thus attains rebirth there. Question: How many kinds of groups are there? Answer: There are three kinds of groups. Question: Since there are three groups, what are their stages and levels? Answer: According to the Sarvāstivāda school, before the contemplation of the five methods of stilling the mind is called the group of definite error. From the contemplation of the five methods of stilling the mind up to the two stages of heat and summit is called the indeterminate group. From the stage of forbearance and above is called the group of definite correctness. If according to the Mahāyāna, those without the lineage of the three vehicles are called the group of definite error. Those who possess the lineage of the three vehicles, but have either not yet resolved their minds [upon bodhi], or though having resolved their minds have not yet attained non-retrogression, are all called the indeterminate group. Those who possess the lineage of the three vehicles and have furthermore resolved their minds and are definitely non-retrograde are called the group of definite correctness. This means that among the aforementioned assembly of those upholding the precepts and so forth, although they wish to be born in Ultimate Bliss, there are some who have not yet entered the stage of definite [correctness]; if they subsequently get to hear the name of Bhaiṣajyaguru Tathāgata, they will then be able to enter the group of definite correctness and ultimately be able to attain rebirth there.
