Sūtra: At the end of life […] naturally transformatively born. / Fifth, the assembly of sages comes to welcome. A padma flower is a red lotus flower. Question: The *[Mahāparinirvāṇa] Sūtra*, *[Da] zhidu lun*, *Wenshi jing*, and others explain that the Āmrapālī woman was originally born in a flower, which is termed moisture-born. Now, in the pure land, being born due to a flower is instead called transformative birth. What is the meaning of this after all? Answer: In the defiled land and among various grasses and trees, before a human takes birth, they are already spontaneously born due to moisture, and moisture constantly exists; furthermore, Āmrapālī and others depended on this moisture to be born, and so it is called moisture-born. In the pure land, the lotus flower and the person exist simultaneously, suddenly appearing from non-existence; neither the person nor the flower arises due to moisture, and therefore it is called transformative birth.
