經。爾時慧命至而可更延　六令延遐壽文分為三。一難。二通。三辨。此則初也。明阿難設難前救脫云。於未來世當有眾生身嬰重病。乃至此人神識得迴還時。既言死相現前則是壽命已盡。復言親屬為歸三寶等。即得還復壽命更增故。令難言云何已盡之命而可更延。

Sūtra: “At that time the venerable […] could be further extended?” / Sixth, causing long life to be prolonged. The text is divided into three parts: first, the objection; second, the resolution; third, the analysis. This is the first part. It clarifies Ānanda raising an objection: previously, Trāṇamukta said that in future eras there will be sentient beings who are afflicted with severe illness, and so on, down to when this person’s consciousness returns. Since he said that the signs of death appear, his lifespan is already exhausted; yet he also said that when relatives take refuge in the Three Jewels for him, he immediately recovers and his lifespan is further increased. Therefore, he causes him to object, asking how a lifespan that is already exhausted could be further extended.
