Sūtra: 'Their minds do not believe and accept it... and will fall into miserable destinies.' Part 3: Generating slander and falling into suffering. By generating slander, they obtain the fruit of the three bad destinies. Transmigrating boundlessly is like a long [cycle of] life and death, dim and dark as night. 'Abundant' (饒) means benefit (利). 'Gain' (益) means joy (樂). Therefore, the Tang version says: 'losing great benefit and joy,' which conveys this very meaning. 'Benefit' refers to good mundane fruits; 'joy' refers to supramundane nirvāṇa. Consider this: hearing the name of Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha and believing, accepting, and revering it, one immediately obtains the benefit of good mundane fruits, and in the distance attains the joy of supramundane nirvāṇa. Now, because of not believing and generating slander, they fall into the bad destinies; hence they 'lose great benefit and joy.'
