Fourth, explaining the cognitive modes (ākāra): the first two liberations form the cognitive mode of impurity and the cognitive mode of signlessness. The third liberation forms the cognitive mode of purity and the cognitive mode of signlessness. The liberation of the base of space, since it cognizes the object of space, forms the cognitive mode of space and the cognitive mode of signlessness. The liberation of the base of consciousness forms the cognitive mode of cognizing consciousness and the cognitive mode of signlessness. The latter two liberations can be understood [by extension]. If spoken of broadly, they give rise to various cognitive modes such as impermanence. Since the eighth liberation has no object of cognition, it also has no cognitive mode.
