Fifth, distinguishing the planes upon which they depend: the first two liberations depend upon the first and second dhyānas. The third liberation depends upon the fourth dhyāna. The four liberations from space onward each depend upon their respective planes. The eighth liberation depends upon the plane of neither-perception. The distracted ground of the desire realm does not generate liberations. In the intermediate [dhyāna] and the threshold samādhis, concentration and wisdom are not balanced, so they also do not generate liberations. The preparatory stages of concentration (sāmantaka) also do not generate them, because they are rapid. If classified by physical location, these eight liberations arise only in reliance on bodies in the three directions, and not in reliance on the northern [continent of Uttarakuru], because it lacks the power of teachings to give rise to them. If classified by bodies in the three realms: the first three depend on bodies of the desire realm; the latter five arise dependently and comprehensively throughout bodies of all three realms.
